Milestones

The Sunday School attached to the Kilham Memorial Church, Epworth, has a long history, dating its inception to within about 20 years of the commencement of Sunday School work by Robert Raikes. The lllth anniversary was celebrated by special services on Sunday and Monday last, and these were attended with the success usual to these popular festivals. On Sunday, morning and night, the Rev W Carter, pastor of the U.M. Church, Doncaster, preached very appropriate and excellent sermons. A children’s service was held in the afternoon, the feature of which was the special hymns and recitations by the scholars, and choir. The children had been admirably trained by Mrs Burman. Miss Ada Dawson was the organist. The services were well attended.

The Way We Were by Colin Ella - Part 31: A mouth-watering delight

Of course we have always had the old favourite, fish and chips, a real tempter if ever there was one, but I think back to those times of regular feasts on rabbit pie, leek pie, jugged hare, the wonderful Irish stews and especially meat and potato pie; ‘tater pie’ as called it.

A meeting of the Epworth Wesley Guild on Friday evening of last week was of a literary character. The Rev J Jones presided over a fair attendance. A carefully prepared and interesting paper was contributed by Mr W Buttrick on ‘Nathanial Hawthorne as a writer of short stories’. After a few interesting details respecting the life of this American author, it was pointed out that all his stories were written with the aim of teaching some deep spiritual truths in an attractive form. An epitome of two of his shorter shories was given to show this. The chairman and others made some interesting remarks on the subject at the close.

For several years in the 1970s, the Epworth Belles concert group played to packed houses at South Axholme Comprehensive School. Their shows were full of non-stop music, dance and comedy, featuring young women from around the area. Mavis Hoole is pictured sucking her finger following a dip into the bowl she is holding.

I HAVE not tried any internet shopping myself but it has now become a very common sight to see the various vans turning up with the web orders.

Splendid progress is being made with the new colliery at Hatfield and the latest development is the installation of a telephonic system. The chimney of the colliery is rapidly approaching completion and has reached a height of over 150 feet or less than three feet of its complete height. The running sand has been pierced by steel piles and five boilers have been placed in position and before long sinking operations will be commenced.
