100 YEARS AGO July 9, 1910 BRAVE THE STORMS

WHEN members of the Epworth Women's Liberal Association, numbering nearly 40, assembled for their annual outing last Thursday the skies wore their most threatening aspect, and before a start could be made, rain came, and then thunder, but these evil omens were not sufficient to daunt the courage of those ladies who had arranged a drive to Drakeholes, Wiseton Hall and Gainsboro. As there was no probability of enjoyment out in the country, they proceeded direct to Gainsboro where a good meal was held; the Gainsboro ladies congratulated the visitors on their pluck in turning out and making the best of things under such adverse conditions

LOWER PRICES FOR MILK

DAIRY farmers in all probability will receive lower prices for milk under the next marketing contract, which comes into operation in October. The factories will be prepared to take all milk that is surplus to liquid requirements, but the manufacturers will buy it only at their own price. It is practically certain that the creamery proprietors will seek still lower prices for the milk they buy when the new contract is negotiated. The sale of milk has increased to such an extent that any advance in liquid milk prices is thought to be out of the question and reductions in contract prices will mean lower 'pool' prices for farmers.

NEGLECTED BUILDING

THE folk of Westwoodside like their domino night – so much so that the weekly domino drive which ran through the winter has continued into high summer; they like the newer excitement of housey-housey. But why doesn't anyone want a game of billiards?

There was only one place where it could be got, and that was in the village Reading Room. But the Reading Room has been for closed for the last two years because there were no members left. There were darts, dominoes and draughts; and, still fulfilling the function which gave the place its name 63 years ago, there were newspapers and periodicals to be read. All for three-ha'pence a week.

1,000 PRIZE SCOOPED

A SENIOR master and two pupils from South Axholme Comprehensive School, Epworth, are in London to collect a 1,000 cheque in a national conservation competition. The school is one of six winners out of 700 entries from all over the country in a National Westminster Bank Project Respond competition.

It recognises the work by pupils over the past nine years in looking after Epworth Turbary Nature Reserve; pupils have created a footpath round the reserve and raised cash through what has now become an annual sponsored bird watch bringing in on average some 200 a year.
