100 YEARS AGO July 30, 1910 UNNECESSARY ALARM
A GOOD deal of unnecessary alarm and unrest is being caused throughout this neighbourhood by a circular sent out from the head office of the County Police. The circulars, which have been drawn up by the officials connected with the Territorial Mobilisation Scheme, informs owners of horses and horse vehicles what to do in case of invasion. The leaflets have had a mixed reception, differing with the temperament and views of the individuals to whom they have been addressed. While a good deal of amusement has been caused in some quarters, not a few people have apparently been somewhat disconcerted and seen visions of invading German soldiers.

RECORD FOR CONTRIBUTION BOXES
THE value of contribution boxes in the homes as a means of ensuring regular and systematic giving towards the Hospital Fund was stressed in the appeals made at the sixth annual demonstration on behalf of Doncaster Royal Infirmary held at Epworth on Sunday. The secretary in announcing that the amount received from the house-to-house collection had been increased to 31 11s. 1d, gave details of the sums collected in the several districts and announced that the West End residents had a record sum to their credit, viz, 9 4s. 4d, and it was here that the greatest number of contribution boxes had been taken. The Markham Main Ambulance Prize Band led the procession to the Memorial Field, where services were held.

CROWLE REMEMBERS THE HURDY GURDY MAN
TOWARDS the latter part of the first half of the 19th century, an Italian arrived obscurely in England and made a living touring mid-east counties with his hurdy gurdy.
This was the man round whose restored gravestone the children of St Norbert's Roman Catholic School, Crowle, stood with their teachers and parish priest, Father Kerrigan. As the knot of children stood with their heads bowed in prayer for the repose of a soul long departed, they were asked never to forget that it is to the man buried there, that they owe the foundation of the Roman Catholic community in that part of the Isle of Axholme.
The grave is that of Gerolamo Vaccar, who died at Crowle on December 14th, 1878, in his 74th year.

The firm is seeking to construct three further jetties at the Grove Wharf, Gunness and to use 20 acres of farmland for storage and vehicle parking.
This is the second of two inquiries ordered by the Secretary of State into plans by Wharton's, the first of which was held earlier this year and a decision is still awaited.
