CROWLE SHOW BREAKS RECORDS
BRILLIANT sunshine brought forth a record number of visitors and competitors to Crowle Agricultural Society's 65th annual show held on Saturday.
Gate receipts were up on previous years and it was estimated that there was a gate of 2,500.
Because of poor support in previous years, the heavy horse section had been replaced by a veteran and vintage car rally, and this proved a big attraction.
The cars provided a colourful and novel spectacle as 31 of them, from all parts of the country, set off for a 16 mile tour of surrounding villages, returning to take driving tests in the show field.
Before the event, Crowle Agricultural Society's first show 'queen', 13-years-old Betty Wraith, was crowned with a tiara.
A special exhibition of handicrafts was staged by pupils of the North Axholme Secondary School and amongst the exhibits of woodwork, dressmaking, etc., were two 11ft 3in. canoes which have been used on the River Trent.

SPONSORED EYE-CAMP SUCCESS STORY
THE Isle of Axholme Lions Club, 28 members strong, has enabled 23 blind people in West Bengal, India, to have their sight restored.
At the same time, one person had an operation to prevent imminent blindness and 217 were cured of potentially blinding conditions.
All were treated at an eye camp sponsored entirely by the Isle of Axholme club, whose officials have now been told of the camp's success.
Club president Mr Alan Holgate, of Epworth, said: "Eye camps, at which patients attend eye specialists, are part of the Lions Clubs international sight conservation programme, which is operated jointly by Lions International and the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind.
Mr Holgate added that the patients suffered from cataracts, which required simple but skilled surgery costing about 4.
