GARDEN FETE SPOILED

THE weather on Wednesday was very disappointing for the Committee of the Epworth District Nursing Association, whose annual garden fete was held in the grounds of Moorland House. An attractive programme of games and competitions had been arranged and a sunny day was needed to ensure the complete success of the event. The afternoon was rather dull, but rain held off and the tennis tournament and other games were proceeded with until shortly after 6pm, when a sharp shower caused a hurried adjournment to the Imperial Hall.

JP Mrs Horberry, who is actively interested in the work of the Haxey Nursing Association, spoke of the great advantages to residents in country parishes in having the services of a District Nurse.

TEA AND CONCERT

The Over Sixties annual tea and concert held in the Youth Centre, Epworth, was enjoyed by 70 guests who were welcomed by Rev. Roy Freeman, Methodist minister.

An excellent tea of ham salad, trifle and cakes was provided and each guest received a quarter of tea and a quarter of sweets. About 35 of the guests with lucky numbers took home sugar, tinned fruit and tinned cream.

Oldest guests were Mrs JW Collins (82) who was brought from Rotherham by her son with whom she now lives. She received an embroidered cushion cover, and Mr Fred Maw (86) puffed away at his gift of tobacco. After tea 10 pupils of Mr FW Atack, head music master at Crowle's North Axholme Secondary School, gave a short concert, and later the entertainers were members of the Belton WI drama group, who presented two short plays.
