100 YEARS AGO August 27 1910 ENGINE KILLS HORSE
THE popular Harwich boat express had a sensational escape from being wrecked between the stations of Haxey and Misterton.
The Great Eastern express crosses this portion of Lincolnshire at a tremendous speed; and as it was tearing along towards the gate house, on the road running from West Stockwith to Langholme, the driver suddenly caught sight of an obstruction on the line. Immediately he blew the whistle, shut off steam, and applied the brakes but there was not space in which to pull up the heavy train, and in a moment it had crashed down on to the obstruction.
Some of those in the front compartments were tossed on the seats, and several suffered from shock.

VISITS BY CROOKSHANK
CAPTAIN HFC Crookshank, Secretary for Mines and MP for Gainsborough, is devoting part of his holiday during the Parliamentary recess, to a study of the conditions of mining in Northern pits, and spent Tuesday on an informal visit to the Maltby Main Colliery.
While the desire of Captain Crookshank is to see pit working in its various phases there was evidence on Tuesday that he is particularly interested in the question of safety in mines, and the reduction, if possible, of mining accidents.
At Maltby he saw many examples of effort on the part of a management to do everything possible to minimise risks and to make mining comparatively safe.

CHURCH'S FIRST STAVE
SO far as is known, St. Andrew's Church, Epworth, has never in its long history possessed a verger's stave – a verge, to give it the correct title. The need has now been made good by a thoughtful gesture by Mr Brian Miles, who has had to give up the office of verger because he is leaving Epworth to go to a teachers' training college.
Mr Miles, also a bell ringer and a former chorister, is a stickler for the proprieties attending divine service, and his gift is typical of his interest in wishing for things to be done the right way and with the right emblems of office.

UNWANTED MEDICINES
NEARLY 500 people, 81 under the age of 14, are admitted to Doncaster Royal Infirmary in a year suffering from poisoning. Household and garden chemicals are responsible in some cases but many of them are the result of taking substances which are normally beneficial.
To encourage people to stop hoarding medicines DUMP (Disposal of Unwanted Medicines and Poisons) campaign is being held throughout September.
Mr B Clarke is acting as agent for the collection of unwanted medicines at the Church Street, Epworth pharmacy.
