100 YEARS AGO August 6, 1910 MEMORIAL WINDOW UNVEILED

THE arrangements made by the late Miss Henrietta Louisa Maw for the placing of a stained-glass window in Epworth Parish Church in memory of her late father and mother, Mr and Mrs Arthur Maw, of Manchester, have been carried out.

The window, which is on the south side of the chancel, is very beautiful in design and colouring, and a valuable addition to the adornment of the Church.

The subject is the first Easter Morn and the Angels appearing to the women at the Sepulchre and the designers are Messrs Hunt and Shrigley, of Lancaster.

A large congregation, including numerous visitors and many nonconformists assembled in the Church when the window was unveiled and dedicated by the Bishop of Lincoln.

HAXEY'S "RAZZLE DAZZLE"

A CARNIVAL, which was described by the Haxey Hospital Committee as a "Razzle Dazzle," was held in the Cricket field on Monday and the proceeds were in aid of Doncaster Infirmary.

A procession of gay, fancy costumes headed by Westwoodside Jazz Band, paraded the streets, after which the judging of the fancy dress classes took place.

Awards were: 1) Iris Stevens and Jennie Pettinger as "Dick Whittington and his cat," 2) Douglas Godley and Arthur Godley, "Princes in Tower," 3) Miss H J Tyler and Miss F Wall "Sheik of Araby."

Much amusement was caused by the finding of the "Mystery Man", who eventually was discovered to be Mr J H Taylor.

Another interesting item was guessing the weight of Mr Robert Camp, whose weight had been certified by an Inspector of Weights and Measures to be 8st. 11lbs 1oz 10 drams, the nearest to this was 8st. 10lbs.

FISH? – THAT'S GOOD; BUT I DON'T CARE FOR CHIPS…

THERE have been a lot of "first times" in the last few weeks for a wide-eyed, long-haired and softly spoken girl of 13 who is spending a fortnight in Epworth.

She is Rut Broberg, Swedish pen friend of Janet Oliver of West End.

Rut attends a Baptist Sunday school in a place not far from Stockholm, and through the Baptist Union's children's missionary magazine, Wonderlands, she first made contact with Janet, who is 14 and attends the Baptist Sunday school in Epworth.

Rut who had never been away from Sweden before, made the boat trip, and then the railway journey to her first holiday call, all by herself.

MYSTERY OF THE DYING PLANTS

EPWORTH residents were puzzled this week when they found that plants in their gardens were turning brown and apparently dying.

Councillor Mrs Jean Turner thinks that drift from crop spraying could be the cause of the trouble because on going into her garden she noticed a strange smell in the air.

She has been in touch with the Air Ministry and crop spraying firms to ascertain when aerial spraying was being undertaken in the Isle.
