100 YEARS AGO August 13, 1910 GARDEN PARTY
THE annual parochial gathering was held at the Rectory by the invitation of the Rector on Wednesday last, under ideal weather conditions. About a hundred parishioners took advantage of the Rector's hospitality, and the picture made by the gathering for tea on the lawn in its frame of fine old trees was both animated and picturesque. The gentler game of croquet attracted many of the ladies, while the youngsters had a rare romp in the extensive grounds and croft. Not till dark were the grounds finally cleared after a most enjoyable evening.

ON THE FARM
THESE are busy days on the farms. Leading has been going on at a good pace throughout the week, the binder has been at work here and there, but little remains to be cut, and on some farms the threshing machine is at work. This is one of the earliest and quickest harvests within memory. Pea picking continues, and on the light land the lifting of potatoes has commenced.

RECTORY GOES
BELTON has had its present Rectory for something like 500 years, but it has not had a Rector since Henry VIII monkeyed with the Church's money. Soon it will have neither, for formalities are almost complete for tenders to be invited to build a modern house which will be a vicarage. The village's succession of rectors covered more than 250 years, from 1280 to 1538, and the last of them was Thomas Cleisby. After Henry VIII had marked-down the Belton living as one rich enough to plunder, he accordingly sequestrated the tithes and sold them to Lincoln Corporation. In 1583 Belton had its first vicar – and vicars the incumbents have been ever since: living in the Rectory. Procedures have been in hand ever since the present Vicar, the Rev A L Adams, came to the parish two years ago for a vicarage to be provided which would be more in keeping with the mid-20th century domestic set-up of country clergy.

EURO-LOANS DRY UP
The supply of cheap loans to job starved Scunthorpe is drying up. Two companies with projects that could be worth 200 jobs to the town have had problems getting low rate European Coal and Steel Community loans which were available through Barclay's Bank Investors in Industry Group PLC (formerly ICFC) and National Westminster Bank.
However, Barclay's Bank and the Investors in Industry Group PLC are believed to have used up their ECSC loan allocation. And while they are disputing this with the EEC, National Westminster are now the sole supplier of such loans. Despite the current problems borough surveyor Mr Ian Hutchison is confident that industrial development in Scunthorpe will escape.
