100 YEARS AGO January 2, 1909 WROOT CHURCH DAMAGED BY FIRE

THE usual quietude of Wroot was disturbed last Tuesday forenoon by a fire which occurred at the Parish Church. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been made clear, and we have so far been unable to obtain a reliable estimate as to the amount of damage done. Recently, new heating apparatus has been installed, consisting of water pipes heated by a slow combustion stove. Clara Cawkwell, aged 20, daughter of the Sexton, was sent by her father, at about 10.0 on Tuesday morning to light the fire as the frost was so keen. Having lit the fire in the vestry she went into the Church, and in a few minutes returned to the vestry with some of the lamps, intending to trim them. While standing with her back to the stove, attending to the lamps she heard a report like an explosion, and on turning round found some hangings close by the stove all in flames. She rushed out to the schoolmaster's house to raise an alarm.

K-K-K-KATIE IN HOSPITAL

K-K-K-Katie, the veteran car owned by Mr H D Spivey of Crowle, ended the year as "stage coach" to Father Christmas. She was taken to Brumby Isolation Hospital by Mr Spivey and Mr T Trout as part of the Christmas decorations.

Her entrance was as unusual as her presence, for Mr Spivey drove the vehicle into the ward through the French windows. He and Mr Trout decorated and floodlit the vehicle and put a dummy Father Christmas in the driving seat.

The matron, Mrs M Marshall commented, "We had kept it a complete secret. The patients got quite a shock when they saw a veteran car coming through the windows."

SPONSORED SWIM WILL BOOST RSPCA GROUP'S FUNDS

FOURTEEN swimmers, of whom all but two will be from the Isle of Axholme, will be doing up to 50 lengths each in a sponsored swim next month to raise funds for the Isle RSPCA Support Group. The organiser, Mrs Meryl Ashby, will be a woman swimmer who having been a polio victim in childhood does most of her swimming by use of her arms.

The 13 who will be assisting her with sponsorships are all adults and quite a few of them are members of the teaching profession in the Isle.
