100 YEARS AGO July 23, 1910 EPWORTH SHOW

THERE will be a local class for rabbits, an open class for the best loaf made from Appleton's flour, and one for the best dish of shelled peas.

The sports section will also include what should prove a very amusing and popular event, namely, a greasy pole climb for a leg of mutton, with a new spade as a second or consolation prize; for the bee fanciers a special prize of a bee-smoker will be given.

HOSPITAL SUNDAY

FOR the first time in the thirty-three years in which demonstrations have been held at Belton to raise money for hospitals the afternoon meeting was presided over by a lady and the hymns were accompanied by a local band – Belton Jubilee Band.

Mrs Sutcliffe, headmistress of Wroot School, who presided over the afternoon gathering, made an excellent speech appealing for generous help for the Hospital Fund and conducted the meeting very capably.

Ald. Ross gave a statement of the amount of the collections, and said that last year eight patients from Belton were in Doncaster Infirmary, and some were there a long time.

It was the duty of parishioners to do what they could to help repay the cost of the services Belton received from the hospital.

END OF A CHAPTER

A LONG chapter in the school life of Haxey closes this year-end, when the secondary modern school loses its separate identity on the transfer of its pupils to the new secondary school at Epworth. The particular chapter which ends is the status as a senior school, which began in 1933, following implementation of the Hadow Report.

There has been a school on the site since the late 1680's; the school log books date back to 1869. In 1870 there is a note: "The ignorance of the children who come in, and the seeming indifference of their parents about education, is really lamentable, if not positively shocking." On December 26th it was so intensively cold that it has been positively freezing at only a few feet from the stove. The ink was all solidly frozen, both in the wells and jars."

CONDITIONS SLAMMED

HORRIFIC and diabolical conditions are being provided at Mother and Baby Clinics in the Isle of Axholme, it was claimed this week. Problems of over-crowding, insufficiently heated premises and lack of facilities were being experienced at many of the clinics; it was reported to a meeting of the Scunthorpe Community Health Council.

Only the clinic at Epworth came up to the standards of a team of council members who visited clinics in the area.
