A REFUSE collector has called it a day after 43 dedicated years of emptying bins across the Isle.
Jim Oliver, of West End Road, Epworth worked his final shift last week, deciding to hang up his gloves just ahead of his 65th birthday next Wednesday.
A well-known face on his rounds since 1966, Jim's unbroken career in public service has remained the one constant over the decades when name changes have come at regular intervals.
Back in the 'swinging sixties' he worked for the Isle of Axholme Rural District Council which later became Boothferry Council and of course today the authority is known as North Lincolnshire Council (NLC).
He said: "You get used to all weathers and getting up at 5am but I happen to like it and it has kept me fit to be honest. I still enjoy it and talking to people and I shall miss that part because you get to know people."
Wife Patsy said she is looking forward to Jim being able to spend more time with their grandchildren as well as indulging in their shared interest of the Isle of Axholme Family History Society.
And when asked who takes the rubbish out in the Oliver household, Patsy explained this task is definitely part of Jim's job description.
She said: "He doesn't let me do that and it has been known that if I have thrown something out, he will go out and retrieve it. But I'm very proud of him and all the family are."
Len Foster, NLC deputy leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods, environments and communities, said the council would be sad to see Jim leave.
He added: "Emptying people's bins for 43 years is what you call commitment. He is probably the longest serving refuse loader and has done a sterling job.
"I'm sure he's got some great stories to tell during his long spell in the job. I wish him all the very best for his retirement and thank him for his hard work and dedication over the years he has worked for North Lincolnshire Council."
