THE Isle bid a sad farewell to one of its most well known community stalwarts this month with the passing of Dolly Johnson.
Dolly, died on November 14, having lived all her 93 years in Owston Ferry and devoted all her times and energy to that village.
Born Doris Vera Torn in 1916, but always known as Dolly, she married the love of her life George Johnson, who was orginally from Epworth and was known as Alf. He sadly passed away in 1990.
They had two sons Michael (58) and Mervyn (56), six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Dolly was never one to sit about and do nothing as her CV testifies.
Among the vast list of Dolly's achievements she was the relief post lady for 30 years, over 60s club secretary for 20 years, a church bell ringer, a passing bell ringer for 57 years, school governor for 30 years, she spent 55 years as verger to her beloved St Martin's Church, was chair of the Isle of Axholme Handicapped group for 37 years and, along with her dear friend Mary Fletcher, carried out 25 years service for the WRVC Scunthorpe Hospital.
At the age of 60 she decided to take up indoor and outdoor flat green bowling playing for Owston Ferry, Haxey and indoors at Scunthorpe. Along with husband Alf they represented Humberside at county level something they were very proud of.
Son Mervyn told the Bells/Advertiser: "She has always raised money for local clubs, church funds and the local care home through organising her ever popular bingo sessions, purchasing prizes from the local shopkeepers and farmers.
"At the age of 90 she was presented with an award for the work she was continuing to do for the elderly in Owston Ferry.
"Finally she was very proud of the 78 years that she sold poppies for the Royal British Legion."
He added: "My mother has always loved people, she's always been a people person.
"The family would like to thank the village of Owston Ferry and St Martin's Church for supporting Dolly all her life and giving her a focal point to channel all her boundless energy.
"She will be sadly missed by all her family and many friends."
