Epworth pub’s fundraiser to help boy with leukaemia

AN EPWORTH pub is to hold a fundraising weekend to help a brave seven-year-old local boy who has been battling against leukaemia for the past three years.

The Old School Inn on Battle Green is holding three days of events to raise money to help Alexander Strong, who lives on the town’s Burnham Road.

“He suffers from a form of leukaemia that only affects children,” explained father Mark. “About four weeks ago he developed another tumour, which went from nothing to the size of a grapefruit in about a month.

“He lost about three kilograms in weight and has been having radio therapy and we’re also trying more chemotherapy.

“We’re running out of what else is available in this country and we’re considering that we might have to go abroad – to Germany or America – for further treatment,” he added.

And it was with this in mind that mien hosts at the Old School Inn – Karen Curran and ‘Mitch’ Mitchell – decided to launch a fundraising weekend.

It kicks off tomorrow (Friday June 8) with a race night and locals are being asked to donate prizes for a raffle being held on the night.

The following Saturday about 40 member of the Old School Inn Golf Society will be playing an 18 hole, sponsored round at the Lincolnshire Golf Course. Some local businesses have already agreed to sponsor the event but more are needed.

Anyone willing to sponsor either a hole or the event is asked to telephone Mitch on 07513 444729. The golfers will return to the Old School Inn for food and in the evening there will be Karaoke to raise yet further funds.

The following day – Sunday – is earmarked as a family fun day, starting at 2pm. There will be a barbecue, bouncy-castle and tombola, all to help raise funds for Alexander’s possible future treatment.

“We’re grateful for what Mitch and Karen are doing for us and if it transpires that we don’t need the money we’re going to give it to a Sheffield organisation called PACT, which helps the families of children suffering from cancer,” said Mr Strong.

The Old School Inn is building up a reputation for fundraising for worthy causes and last year raised more than £2,500 for the Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Scunthorpe.
