A COUPLE who met towards the end of World War Two are today celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Kathleen Naughton (78) and her husband Peter (84) have been married exactly 60 years today and they reflected on their first meeting at Bullhassocks Farm, near Westwoodside, in 1944.

Peter travelled to the Isle from his native County Mayo in western Ireland to work on the farm as a horseman and it was there that he met local lass Kathleen.

“I used to see him go for the bus and I was in my teens when we first started going out,” explained Kathleen, of Park Close, Westwoodside.

“For our first date we went to the circus, there was a special bus laid on and I think it was 1950.”

Romance blossomed and the pair wed at St Norbert’s RC Church in Crowle in 1952, enjoying a brief honeymoon in Leeds.

The couple raised two sons although tragedy struck when Dennis died at the age of 47. They now have five grandchildren and family is very important to both Kathleen and Peter.

She added: “Our grandchildren mean absolutely everything to us, I wouldn’t swap them for all the money in the world and all our family are very good to us.”

Peter shared his secret for reaching the 60 year milestone.

He added: “I would say if you have an argument make sure the wife has the last word - that way everyone will be a lot happier!”

The couple enjoyed a party at their home on Sunday with family and friends popping in to share in their celebrations.

And they also received a congratulatory card from the Queen who herself will celebrate 60 years on the throne in June.

Son Patrick Naughton said: “They have had to work hard and haven’t always had things easy but it’s a tribute to them that they stick together through thick and thin and are devoted to each other.”
