THUGS who went on a ‘mindless’ £7,500 wrecking spree at a Doncaster shopping centre are being hunted by police.

Dozens of windows were smashed at shops in the Waterdale complex after two men went on the rampage with a hammer in an early hours blitz before Christmas.

The town’s nearby Catholic Club also came under assault in the incident which has shocked shopping centre bosses.

Rebecca Berry, a spokesman for the Waterdale centre, said: “It was just absolute mindless vandalism – I’ve never seen anything like it.

“I hope someone has some information and can come forward and help us find these men.”

She said the cost of the pair’s wrecking spree would run into thousands of pounds.

Shops targeted included the British Heart Foundation charity shop and the South Yorkshire Credit Union. Windows at the Catholic Club in Waterdale were also put through.

She said: “There was no method at all in it.

“The credit union had every single one of its windows smashed

“It just looks like a case of drunken, stupid behaviour – but obviously we want to find these two men.”

She said the damage appeared to have been caused by a stolen safety hammer – similar to the type used in ‘emergency break glass’ alarms.

The incident was captured on CCTV and police are studying the images in the hope of tracing the men responsible.

The attack on the Waterdale area comes as the area prepares for a rebirth with the opening of the new civic quarter offices and new performance venue Cast in the newly created Sir Nigel Gresley Square.

Rebecca said: “It looks like two lads who were on a night out.”

n Anyone with information about the incident, which took place on Sunday, December 16, at about 3.30am, is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or, alternatively, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 392 of December 17, 2012.
