BREAKING NEWS: Woman hit by train

POLICE are investigating after reports that a woman was killed after being struck by a train at Mexborough railway station.

The 28-year-old Sheffield woman, who has not yet been named, was reportedly hit by an empty passenger train at 12.08am this morning (January 26).

Police and paramedics attended but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

British Transport Police said two men were arrested, but have since been released without charge. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

In a statement, the force said: “Officers will now be informing the woman’s next of kin and preparing a file for the coroner.

“The train involved was an empty Northern Rail passenger service which was returning to the depot.

“Mexborough station was closed for a period of time overnight whilst officers worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. It was re-opened at 4.45am.”
