Cuckoo is captured by Ken

HAXEY man Ken Wood has managed to film a cuckoo fledgling being fed by a sparrow in his back garden - and, with the help of the Bells/Advertiser, has offered it to the BBC's Springwatch programme.

The ultra-rare sighting was made in his back garden, and he said: "I've never seen a cuckoo, much less one being fed, and I'm sure 90 per cent of the people I know haven't seen one either."

The birds were sitting on the fence in the back garden of his home in Haxey Lane, Haxey, with a hedge sparrow working hard to feed the pigeon-sized cuckoo.

"The sparrow was nearly losing its head every time it gave the cuckoo something to eat. It's mouth was like a cave," he said.

Not having internet access, Mr Wood wasn't sure how to share his footage with other interested birdwatchers, so the Bells team happily put him in touch with BBC Springwatch.

Mr Wood used to live in Birmingham surrounded by other properties, but now he's in Haxey, he's delighted to see a variety of birds including goldfinches, blackbirds, a wren, a thrush, and starling 'by the million'.

"We even had a field mouse in the bird feeder. He ate so much he couldn't get out, and we had to release him," he said.
