Drivers asked to take extra care during school holidays

ISLE drivers are being asked to be extra cautious when driving in residential areas during the school holidays, as it is more than likely there will be young people out and about on the streets.

The request has come from the North Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (NLRSP) which recommends that motorists should obey the Twenty is Plenty rule - and stick to 20mph when driving in areas where there are vulnerable road users about.

The organisation first launched the Twenty is Plenty campaign three years ago, which encouraged local residents to help promote the 20mph rule by displaying campaign cards in their windows.

"By driving at 20mph, rather than at the usual 30mph limit for residential areas, the stopping distance is nearly halved. This not only reduces the likelihood of a collision occurring but if it does happen then the seriousness of injuries could be reduced significantly," said a spokeswoman for NLRSP.

Anyone who feels that their neighbourhood would benefit from the Twenty is Plenty scheme is asked to contact the NLRSP on (01724) 297478.

l The NLRSP was established in 2001 to reduce the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on roads, raise public awareness of road safety issues and encourage safer driving.

The partnership's members include representatives from North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust and the Highways Agency.
