Flooding problems can be highlighted by residents

ANOTHER public consultation event has been organised for residents to find out more information about Isle flood defences for the next 100 years.

The Environment Agency (EA) is currently holding a series of public exhibitions in connection with its River Trent Catchment Flood Management Plan (CFMP).

There was a huge outcry from residents, local farmers and politicians when, in 2007, the EA announced the Isle would be allowed to revert back to marshland in policy option two of the CFMP.

The EA then backpedalled and decided to organise a separate strategy for the Isle, working and consulting with all concerned parties.

It has recently proposed placing the Isle in policy option three of the document - continuing to manage flood risk at present levels - but the EA is seeking feedback on this suggestion.

Coun Liz Redfern, leader of the Conservative group on North Lincolnshire Council, has arranged a public exhibition following two similar EA events in Pocklington and Goole earlier this month.

This will take place at Belton Public Hall on Tuesday, March 23, between 2pm and 7pm.

Coun Redfern, who represents the Axholme Central ward, maintains it will be easier to have concerns heard and responded to at the consultation stage than afterwards.

She added: "Colleagues and I have been pressing for the Environment Agency to maintain and improve existing flood defences after they initially intended to cease maintaining them, allowing flooding in the area to become 'normal'. "Thankfully they have now agreed to maintain existing flood defences but they do not feel that any further improvements are required. I am hopeful that people will attend and highlight specific problems and also any future developments which are likely to increase the threat of flooding.

"Conservative colleagues and I will be there to make representations and to hear any additional concerns of which we are unaware. I urge people to attend."
