Former MP takes on new role

FORMER Isle MP Ian Cawsey has taken up a new appointment to lead on political and parliamentary affairs for WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals).

WSPA is the world's largest animal welfare network and co-ordinates the work of over 900 animal welfare organisations in over 150 countries.

The organisation has offices in 13 countries (the UK, Tanzania, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Denmark, Colombia and the USA) and has consultee status with the UN and the Council of Europe.

WSPA's work is focused on four main areas of animal welfare - disaster management (dealing with the animal welfare consequences of man made or natural disasters), the commercial exploitation of wildlife, farm animal welfare and companion animal welfare.

Ian said: "I am delighted to be able to work with WSPA on the excellent work that I know they undertake. Given the nature of the issues WSPA deals with it is important that we have support from Governments and from Parliamentarians and I hope that I will be able to ensure this is the case.

"We are already building a campaign here in the UK to highlight the animal welfare consequences of dairy factories as was recently proposed at Nocton near Lincoln. We want to work with all interested groups to ensure dairy production in the UK is sustainable, of high quality and has high animal welfare standards. We don't want the UK to adopt the practices of some countries, where thousands of cows are kept locked indoors in intensive units and rarely, if ever, eat grass. We know that the public support us on this and we want to ensure our elected representatives do as well.

"I think lots of people know that animal welfare is extremely important to me and obviously I have a keen interest in politics so this draws them both together and I'm really looking forward to helping WSPA with their work."

WSPA Chief Executive, Mike Baker said: "Ian has a huge reputation for his knowledge and work on animal welfare and was one of the best Members of Parliament on the subject. So we are extremely pleased to have been able to secure his services for WSPA and he will bring fantastic experience and knowledge to us. We are really looking forward to having him on board."
