Low Street Stores in Haxey was recently crowned the Best Store for outlets under 1,000 square feet by the independent retailer chain Today.

Darren Spry has ran the store alongside his wife, Julie, since the pair moved to the Isle seven years ago.

The father-of-four invested £60,000 in the business last October, a revamp which has transformed the look of the building and built upon his loyal customer base.

Darren (38) only discovered they had been nominated for the award last month and was delighted to receive a trophy in a ceremony held at the Forest Pines Hotel, near Scunthorpe.

He said: “When I heard our name read out I couldn’t believe it but we are absolutely delighted to win.”

Darren is originally from Devon and he is now settled in the village with his young family. He feels the recent revamp - and retail award - justifies their commitment to the business.

“We deliver to customers as far as East Lound and close to Misterton,” he added.

“We want to carry on serving the community and supporting local football teams, trying to give as much back as we can.

“The local community has been very supportive of us and our recent revamp has been very much for the better.”

Today retail development manager Claire Buckle said: “The award winner for The Best Today’s Store under 1,000 square feet is a shop that continually demonstrates great service to their local community and one that has seen consistent growth throughout their time with the organisation.

“Indeed in the heavy snow last year, they delivered essential groceries to their aged customers who were unable to get to the shop and they have set up an operation continuing to do this.

“This commitment to service and redevelopment of their site has increased sales by an incredible 85 per cent in 2011.”
