Isle school students in study on child slavery

PUPILS from one Isle school got an insight into the issue of child slavery during a special day of activities.

South Axholme Community School in Epworth suspended formal lessons to allow for an in-depth study into the global issue, part of a regional project coordinated by Hull Development Education Centre.

The day started with an assembly during which 12 volunteers were chosen to be 'slaves' or 'child brides', then a session on the extent of child slavery and its affects.

Pupils also experienced tasks commonly undertaken by victims such as drilling as 'soldiers' in an army.

Group tasks saw a discussion into what could be done to end child slavery and those taking part gave feedback on what it felt like to be enslaved.

Activities also included a visit from former student James Fuller, of Westwoodside, who drilled pupils from year eight. The 19-year-old is an officer army cadet currently working for The Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme at Newcastle University. He will complete his officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst when he finishes his degree course.

A school spokeswoman said: "It was an extremely worthwhile day. Congratulations to the pupils who took part and to the team of teachers who planned, organised and ran the event - Mrs Lay, Miss Davis, Miss Wood, Mr Williams, Mrs Gleadhill, Mr Woodland and Mr Howitt.

"We now plan to meet with the other schools who took part in the project to compare notes."
