Man paid by travellers to drive stolen vehicle appears in court

A TRACKING device fitted to a Doncaster family’s caravan helped police follow it along the motorway when it was stolen, a court heard.

The £8,000 caravan was taken from outside a home in Scawsby in the summer of 2010.

However, within a short time, the caravan’s owner was rung at work by the tracking firm to say the vehicle was heading through Hampole, towards the A1.

A West Yorkshire Police helicopter followed it to the M62 where the vehicle, which was being towed by a stolen Nissan Qashqai, was stopped and the driver arrested.

Unemployed Kevin Lochrie, from Ferryhill, County Durham, has now been jailed for a total of 21 months at Doncaster Crown Court.

The 40-year-old admitted handling stolen goods and driving while disqualified.

Laura Marshall, prosecuting, told the court that Lochrie had told police he had been paid £40 by members of the traveller community to drive the Nissan, stolen from the Nissan factory in Sunderland, and caravan to an unnamed destination.
