Motorists warned about sat nav use
HUMBERSIDE Fire and Rescue Service is urging Isle motorists to be careful when using sat nav devices in their cars.
It is essential drivers have a clear view of both the road and pavement and concerns are being raised that many systems are being fixed on windscreens in places which could prevent the sighting of oncoming dangers.
Most sat navs are about 10cm square which can have the same effect as placing a blank square in the middle of a driver's field of vision - hiding potential hazards such as a small child by the edge of the pavement or an obstruction in the road.
A windscreen crack as small as 10mm would result in a failed MOT so a defect tenfold in size highlights the dangers of locating a sat nav in a potentially dangerous position.
The Highway Code also states windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions and it is important to consider the locations of any airbags, to ensure their use would not be compromised, if needed.
Glenn Ramsden, of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, hopes raising awareness of safety concerns will make motorists think twice about where they place sat navs and help make for safer roads.
"Otherwise ensure that you have the directions of the local Accident and Emergency programmed in readiness as you might just be needing it," he added.
