New powers for officers to clamp down on parking

WARNING notices were handed out to drivers from across the region, including in the Isle, as part of a clampdown on illegal parking.

North Lincolnshire Council's team of civil enforcement officers have issued over 500 warning notices in two weeks for parking contraventions - some in Crowle and Epworth. These people would have received a penalty notice up to 70.

Last Monday, NLC took over civil enforcement powers from Humberside Police. In preparation, the 14-strong team of officers went out on patrol on the streets of North Lincolnshire issuing warning notices to drivers.

The majority were parked on double yellow lines, had overstayed their time limit, or returned before allowed.

As well as Epworth and Crowle, the officers visited Scunthorpe, Ashby, Brigg, Barton, Broughton, Scawby, Messingham, Winterton and Bottesford.

As part of the scheme, the fully trained officers will be equipped with state-of-the-art hand-held computers and cameras that take photographic evidence to help deal with objections.

The officers will not only ensure drivers park safely and legally, but will act as ambassadors giving people directions and offering advice on car security.

They'll also monitor 'hot spots' and identify new traffic regulation orders road safety orders or if existing orders need changing.

Councillor Bernard Regan, Cabinet member for Highways and Planning, said: "Many motorists have approached our officers for advice about the parking restrictions and the majority of comments have been positive.

"People are starting to take notice and we're already seeing a fall in number of cars parked incorrectly on many streets - which is great news.

"We must remember that the vast majority of people do park properly. And if you park correctly, you've nothing to worry about.

"But we won't hesitate to issue penalty notices to bad drivers. So make sure you park safely and legally."
