Pupils get a break from the norm

WEDDINGS and watersports proved to be the order of the day as students from one Isle school broke away from the traditional curriculum.

Over 70 pupils from year eight at Epworth's South Axholme Community School paid a recent visit to the Low Mill Outdoor Centre in North Yorkshire.

The trip had been organised by Scott Barlow, head of PE, who said the annual event was one of the highlights in the school calendar.

He added: "Pupils take part in a variety of activities including abseiling, gorge walking, caving, canoeing and archery. It is an excellent way of trying new activities and helps students build confidence in their own abilities and as part of a team."

Meanwhile back at the school, year nine pupils used role play to learn about the commitment issues associated with marriage.

A Christian "wedding" ceremony was organised - acted outdoors for the first time - as pupils nominated themselves for a variety of roles.

The ceremony featured a wedding coordinator, photographer and of course the "bride" and "groom" with all pupils putting in a lot of effort and making it a truly special occasion.

Unlike the real thing, everything - ceremony, speeches and the all-important cake - was completed in just 50 minutes with the "vicar," alternatively RE teacher Helen Lay and graduate teacher Graeme

Williams, ensuring events went smoothly.

The exercise formed part of the school GCSE course entitled 'Thinking about God and Morality' where pupils consider different attitudes towards sex, marriage and divorce.

This year group will be the first to take the RE short course GCSE at the end of their year 10 studies.
