Science and discovery on the timetable
STUDENTS at one Isle school discovered the appliance of science when they took part in three days of cross-curricular activities.
Year seven pupils from Epworth's South Axholme Community School worked to an alternative timetable which combined the performing arts and science.
A variety of media activites took place and 'deep learning' days at the school were complemented with a trip to the Space Centre in Leicester.
Tasks in art were completed with the support of local resident artist Keith Parkinson and music, food technology, drama, animation and dance also played a part in the exercise.
A series of practical experiments were carried out, including the burning of food to determine which was the most energy efficient to be taken onto space shuttles.
Students used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda in film canisters to make 'pop' rockets from the pressure built up by gases.
The culmination of the cross-curricular activities was the launch of the rocket 'SAX1' which took place on the school field, accompanied by explosions of hydrogen balloon fuel cells.
Projects were also completed for parental visits after school.
Tours of different departments displayed the work carried out by students who had utilised animation, artwork, musical compositions and choreographed dances using space music and interpretive movement.
And visits also took in the genuine space food which had been tasted and discussed with spectators also able to watch experiments being demonstrated by pupils within the science department.
Head of science at South Axholme, Laura Jenkins, said: "They covered a whole range of curriculum subjects, some of which they will develop in more detail in year eight. Some of them even branched out into extra-terrestrial life which was really interesting - there were some outstanding results.
"This has helped them approach things in a very different way. Students here are so good at participating in anything from a different perspective and they really enjoyed themselves."
