Scouts enjoy camping food
BEAVER Scouts and their parents from the 1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts have gone back to nature and lived in the woods during their annual camp.
Beavers and their parents enjoyed perfect weather, and everyone enjoyed exploring the woods, eating lots of 'home cooked' food, and the camp fire.
The camp is just one of a series of events run for the 100-strong group, which uses Westwoodside Village Hall as it base.
Tony Lee is a member of the 18-strong leadership team. He said: "This year, amongst many other activities, they have explored the Lindholme Peat Moors with experts from Natural England, where they ever saw some of the local snakes basking in the sun.
"They learned about rearing beef cattle on a visit to the herd kept by Gill and David Carr, and we had a barbecue night in a local wood, where they all cooked their own suppers," he added.
The scout group is just three years old, and continues to go from strength to strength, said Mr Lee. "Our target with the Beavers is to develop self-confidence and life skills with a programme of activities both in Westwoodside Village Hall and in the surrounding countryside. The local woods, turbarys and peat moors provide an exciting yet safe environment for the youngsters."
Beavers, which youngsters can join from the age of six, is the starting point in the scouting experience, leading on to late teens with Wolf Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts.
The groups has a few vacancies for the start of the autumn school term, and anyone interested is asked to ring Karl Eastham on 01427 754120, or visit the web site at www.axholmescouts.org.
