Solution to six-year stand-off over road

A SOLUTION appears to have been reached over the long-running saga concerning the width of an Isle road.

Yorkshire Moors Bottom Road, near Crowle, has been at the centre of a six-year long stand-off between the town council and the highway authority, North Lincolnshire Council (NLC).

Back in 2003 an order was made to add the road, located between Dole Road and Crook O' Moor Road, to the definitive map of Lincolnshire but both councils disagreed over the recognised width of the route.

Crowle Town Council maintained the seven-and-a-half metre width of the road - known as a BOAT (Byway Open to All Traffic) - should be increased to 66 feet.

It subsequently took legal advice and appealed against the decision of NLC not to make a modification order under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

An end to the impasse could be in sight after the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Hillary Benn MP, upheld the town council's appeal over the definitive width of the road.

A lengthy report published last month found in favour of the town council and NLC has been directed to modify the definitive map to 66 feet.

Crowle town councillor Brian Duffield said: "It's so sad that this wasn't sorted out in an amicable way back in 2003 when this all started."

And a NLC spokesperson added: "The council is looking at modifying the definitive statement following an appeal by Crowle Town Council."
