Step out for cancer with Gillian

IT is a poignant year for Mexborough’s fantastic fundraiser Gillian Headon.
After her friend Sandra Rush, died from cancer, Gillian launched the sponsored ‘Rush to Walk’. It made an incredible £76,000 over five years, for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
This year is the tenth anniversary of Sandra’s death, and the walk that goes on in her memory, will take place on May 6.
One founder of Rush to Walk, Lynn Wilson, 54, of Conisbrough, aims to be there despite her recent diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer.
And joining her will be former walk marshal Mick Weir, who has terminal lung cancer.
The pair plan to stride out with the army of loyal supporters who this year will include representatives from Bluebell Wood, Rotherham Hospital Charities and Aurora, with funds to be divided equally.
A further donation will go to Niamh Power - an eight-year old Maltby girl who need funds to treat her recurring brain tumour abroad.
Gillian said: “Niamh is the granddaughter of a good friend, and members of her family have joined us for previous walks. There is no more medical help for Niamh in the UK”.
This year’s ‘Rush to Walk with Bosom Buddies’ route will offer options of four, six or 10 miles, and more walkers are wanted to build on the 206 who stepped out last year. The emphasis is on community and working to help each other, said Gillian, of Doncaster Road.
Enrolment and sponsorship forms are available from the charity website, from Gillian, or from Sandra’s daughter Natalie who is very involved.
