Vehicles break the speed limit
A COUNCILLOR is demanding a crackdown on speeding motorists before someone gets seriously injured or killed on a stretch of Isle road.
Coun Trevor Barker is seeking action after a survey revealed some vehicles using Derrythorpe Road in Althorpe were travelling at more than twice the 30mph speed limit.
Coun Barker had received complaints from residents and he contacted the highways team at North Lincolnshire Council who then conducted a survey.
Results showed more than half the motorists using the route were breaking the 30mph limit.
The survey was conducted between January 23 and 29 with almost 17,000 vehicles being monitored and figures revealed the average speed travelled was almost 36mph.
Statistics also showed 492 vehicles travelling daily between 40 and 50mph, 60 between 50 and 60mph - and eight motorists exceeding 60mph.
Coun Barker, who represents the Axholme North ward, described the results as "absolutely shocking".
He added: "More than half of those drivers were doing 35mph or more - that's potentially the difference between life and death if they should hit someone at that speed.
"I have spoken to our road safety people and they are doing their top 20 list of speeding routes and this road will be in there with those figures. It will attract special measures - we just can't allow road-users to drive in this way."
Coun Barker also explained the authority will be reviewing speed limits across all routes in April and May.
PC Barry Gardner is the casualty reduction officer for Humberside Police B Division, which includes the Isle, and he said he was "horrified" at the survey figures.
He explained the force was aware of speeding issues at Derrythorpe Road and a police crackdown last September and October resulted in 29 motorists falling foul of the law.
This included the issuing of cautions, fixed penalty notices and one drink-driver was also apprehended.
"We are working in partnership with the local authority and that site is in our speed management strategy," PC Gardner added.
"I have every sympathy with people affected by these offenders because that's what they are, completely thoughtless as far as I'm concerned.
"It's obviously a problem and we are doing something about it but we can't be there every day."
The Humberside Force will aslo be drawing up a 'top 40' list of speeding 'hot spots' next month.
