Village hall is set to mark its quarter of a century

AN ISLE community building is marking its 25th year with a silver celebration later this month.

March 2010 marks a quarter of a century in the life of Luddington Village Hall.

And the rural venue will be opening its doors from 2pm on Sunday March 21 for everyone to join in the anniversary.

To mark the occasion the committee have held a competition involving pupils of the nearby Luddington and Garthorpe School designing a new sign for the village, which could also be used as a logo across all the hall's communications.

The competition has been judged by three local residents who were committee members back in 1985 when he hall first opened, Mr Leckenby, Mr Bill Jackson and Councillor Don Stewart, along with his wife Wendy.

The highlight of the afternoon will be the unveiling of the new village hall sign at 3pm by Coun Stewart followed by afternoon tea and a quiz spanning the past 25 years.

Visitors to the hall will also be able to reminisce with friends whilst looking over old photographs of the hall and Luddington.

There will also be a display of all the entrants to the design-a-sign competition, plus a chance to meet with the existing committee members, see how much it costs and the work it takes to keep the hall running and hear about the organisers' ambitions for the future.

People from the area are invited to share their memories and loan any photographs they may have of Luddington Village Hall or the village by email to Luddington Village Hall chairman Sam Stewart at sls79@hotmail.com or by phoning her on 07766 317619.

Sam told the Bells/Advertiser: "With the recent closure of the village's only public house the village hall has become the main focal point for residents of Luddington and the surrounding area.

"Now 25 years old, the hall is ready for some much needed maintenance including a new boiler, central heating system, new doors, windows, kitchen, toilets and new curtains and carpets.

"The committee of ten local residents are working hard to secure funding to enable the full refurbishment of the hall."
