Isle duo wow judges to make regional final

Pete Sowerby, of Sandtoft Road, Belton, and Rhiannon Scott, of Epworth Road, Owston Ferry, wowed judges at the regional auditions of the BBC Live and Unsigned Competition.

The acoustic duo - who formed the band Rita Payne six months ago - had just two minutes to impress a panel of six judges at Sheffield City Hall last weekend.

But the pair - both aged 22 - managed to hit the right note and have booked a return date to the same venue on March 25 when the regional finals will be held, in front of a paying audience.

“One of the biggest challenges was trying to cut one of our songs, Forced to Run, down to just two minutes,” explained Pete.

“I’m particularly proud of Rhiannon whose banjo playing really stood out.”

Now the two former South Axholme School pupils will have three-and-a-half minutes to perform at the regional final.

“We have to combine one of our songs with a cover so we’re looking at a well-known pop song,” added Pete.

If they succeed next month there will then be a live area final in May followed by the grand final at London’s O2 Arena in July.

The winning act will win £10,000 in cash plus another £10,000 publicity package.
