A DEARNE school is one of only two schools in the country to be invited to an international conference.
Pupils and staff from the Dearne ALC have won their bid to be included in a special remembrance event to take place at Ypres, Belgium.
They will join dignitaries along with representatives from France, Belgium and Germany, for the trip organised by Poppy Travel - the travel arm of the Royal British Legion.
Work done by the school to commemorate Remembrance Day, along with their regular battlefield tours, impressed the award body, who are running the Ypres event as a pilot for future years.
Dearne pupils will lay wreaths on behalf of British schools at Menin Gate, and while they are in Belgium it is expected there will be a major announcement about future plans for a century’s remembrance of WWl.
History teacher Ian Williams will accompany 16 Y9 pupils on the trail blazing trip, and said this week he was “thrilled” at the prospect.
“We applied to be included in this in June, he said, “We found out we had won a place at the end of September. But we leave on October 10 so it has been one big rush to get everything organised”.
