North Lindsey College is looking to repeat the success of its campaign in 2013 and 2014, in which they successfully managed to secure 100 new apprenticeship places by working with businesses, as part of National Apprenticeship Week, March 14 to 18.

The Scunthorpe-based college currently has more than 800 students on apprenticeship courses in areas including management, health and social care, accounting, business and construction. And as employers take on apprentices throughout the year, the college is urging more companies to come forward and create training places for new recruits.

One apprentice who benefited from the scheme is Destiny Frear, who was recently taken on as a business development apprentice by Scunthorpe-based aluminium can manufacturer Can-Pack UK Limited.

She said: “Not only will I gain education and qualifications in the business sector, but I will also gain work experience which I feel is equally as important.”

Deborah Oakes, senior human resources advisor at the firm, added: “Destiny is doing really well, she has settled in, she is growing in confidence and really represents herself very well given her age and experience. She gets on with tasks without delay, asks logical questions and seems really enthusiastic.”

Jill Cooper, business development director at the college, said: “We have a shortage of skills and experience in many sectors and apprentices can help to bridge that gap and develop people we need to meet local needs.”
