Alan is an inspiration
A CROWLE man is celebrating after overcoming personal heartache to make the British Paratriathlon Performance Squad for 2010.
Alan Rayment had to endure a double leg amputation in the 1990s after he suffered leg ulcers and contracted the flesh-eating bug MRSA.
Since then the former HGV driver has acted as an inspiration to many disabled people after retraining as a recreation duty officer at Scunthorpe's North Lindsey College - and raising over 30,000 for various charities.
Alan (34) has completed numerous marathons and half-marathons as well as cycling 500km from Vietnam to Cambodia - and racking up a gruelling 1,000-mile plus hand cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats.
The father-of-two recently scooped a National Training Award - culminating in a personal invitation to the House of Commons - and his latest achievement has seen him make the British Paratriathlon Performance Squad.
Alan, of Windsor Road, admitted the selection process was tough but he is ready for the challenges ahead and, ultimately, hopes to compete at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, Brazil.
"Triathlon is not currently a paralympic sport however it is in the process of applying for full inclusion status for Rio and we should find out the final decision within the next 12 months," he explained.
"This year will see me race at European and World events this is a first for me and I am looking forward to the challenge. I am asking for help for me to achieve my goal and win medals for Great Britain. If any individuals or companies would like to sponsor me in any way it would be greatly accepted."
Individual race donations, corporate sponsorship and logo endorsements on official GB kits are all ways of helping Alan achieve yet higher standards.
Stoke-based Matrix Fitness Systems has provided one of their 'Johnny G' Krankcycles which will help the triathlete focus on upper body strength and increase his endurance capacity.
A spokesman said: "Alan is a true inspiration to athletes at all levels, by showing how he managed to turn a tragic situation of his double leg amputation into a positive achievement by becoming a world class paratriathlete.
"Matrix is committed to supporting talented and dedicated athletes like Alan to achieve their goals."
Those wishing to sponsor Alan should logon to www.alanrayment.co.uk or call him on 07739 356488.
