Epworth Colts U10s 2
Broughton Ravers 0
THE Colts were fired up for this match against second placed Broughton.
Within minutes, Colts were unlucky not to go ahead with a fine free-kick from Liam Norton that beat the keeper but was knocked away by a defender.
Broughton responded and it took a superb save from George Moore to keep the scores level.
The away side tried their luck again soon after, but Will Gillis made an excellent interception and cleared the danger.
Colts then began to control the match and frequently broke up the Broughton attacks, with Cam Young, Ben Carson and Gillis coping easily with the Broughton forwards.
Midfield dynamoes Jordan Jenkinson and Norton were running riot down the wings, firing in crosses for forward Dan Brewer, who was unlucky not to put one of the chances away.
Towards the end of the first half Carson picked the ball up from a pass by Young just inside the Broughton half.
After a brilliant run down the wing, he cut the ball back to Jenkinson who fired in a superb half volley that curved away from the keeper and nestled in the top corner.
On the stroke of half time, Norton and Gillis combined to set up Brewer, whose shot went narrowly wide.
The first half ended with a deserved 1-0 lead to the Colts.
The second half began with a change of personnel and it proved to be a good move from manager Andy Gillis.
Mitch Fulwood collected the ball in a defensive position and played a neat through-ball to the lively Bobby Foster.
He beat two players and cracked in a powerful volley that the Broughton keeper could only parry, and there was Dan Brewer on hand to stab the ball home to make it 2-0 to the Colts.
The boys were now in full flow. Power-house Frazer Horsefield's runs from midfield had Broughton on the back foot on several occasions.
The Colts were unlucky not to go 3-0 up when a fine passing move between Jenkinson, Fulwood and Foster ended with the latter having a powerful drive blocked by a Broughton defender.
A rare break-away by Broughton ended with a free-kick being awarded to them about 15 yards out. The Broughton forward smashed the ball goal-ward but keeper Moore made the save look easy.
The Colts defence had to keep their concentration as Broughton poured forward looking for a consolation goal but Carson, Young and Gillis were equal to the task. They played some lovely passes out of defence to set up the midfield and strikers.
Just before the final whistle a great passing movement between Horsefield and Carson sent Fulwood on his way towards goal with a mazy run that ended with him firing just wide.
This was an excellent result for the boys who played some lovely, controlled football.
Man of the Match was awarded to the hard-working Ben Carson.
