Colts back to full strength
Epworth Colts U13s A 4 Broughton Ravers 0
EPWORTH'S coach, Sean Kelly was blessed with a full squad to pick from for this Saturday morning match and decided to give new signing Will Harvey a run out at centre back alongside the trusted Ogley, with captain Beevers pushed forwards in a sweeping role.
Colts' set a high tempo from the off with the hosts virtually camped in the opposition's half for much of the opening period forcing them onto the back foot and, had they made more of their early chances, could easily have taken an early lead over their old rivals. Sterling, on the right for Epworth looked particularly threatening, ghosting past the visitors with relative ease, but the wily Broughton countered well and threatened on the break more than once, forcing Colts keeper Johnson to flex his defensive muscles and counter with some intelligent distribution to set Colts' up once more in this fiercely fought league clash.
There was some clever interplay between Hill and Kelly up front and with Maw pushing up as well; it only looked a matter of time before the home side took the lead, but Broughton stubbornly held on and, as was their style countered once more forcing the dependable Young into play who, incidentally had a cracking match, pairing solid defending with some quality passing play.
The back line of Young, Ogley, Harvey (making a fantastic debut in Colts A team) and Nicholson played brilliantly together in an unfamiliar back four, keeping Broughton at bay quite admirably, frustrating the visitor's and bringing out the odd niggly tackle in the process in the run up to the break.
Second half saw the Epworth side slightly reshuffled with Nicholson pushing up onto the wing in to add a little impetus into the game, this paid dividends almost immediately as, only minutes into the half, Maw buried the opener, with the assistance of Hunt and Nicholson, giving Colts a well deserved lead.
This seemed to open up the game a little as, instinctively and without shirking their defensive duties, Beevers and Moore pushed up more to support the attack and pen the visitors in more.
Hunt could have extended Epworth's tally with a tasty shot which was only just parried by the visiting stopper. The resulting corner triggered a bit of a goalmouth scramble in which a handful of Colts players could have scored and ended with Epworth doubling their score line with Ogley stabbing in at close range past the flailing Broughton keeper.
With the floodgates open, it was Hill's turn to hog the limelight, curling in Colt's third courtesy of a clever Tuplin through ball who, in turn bagged his own shortly after with, it has to be said, probably the calmest take of the season, thanks to the marauding Maw having done much of the footwork for him.
A good day at the office was had by the entire Colt's squad, with several genuine man of the match contenders. It was left to the tricky midfield maestro Finn Kelly to take that honour though in this hard fought, full blooded tie which looked to have moulded the next phase of the A-Team squad.
