Colts are beaten in seven-goal thriller
Clee Town 4
Epworth Town Colts 3
A CUP classic saw two under-11 sides take part in a topsy-turvy game where the lead changed hands several times.
The hosts started well and completely dominated the early exchanges with the Colts struggling to get out of their own half and goalkeeper Jack Lifsey keeping the visitors on level terms.
Clee took an early lead but the visitors equalised when Luke Bradley struck a first time shot from outside the box after a corner had been cleared.
The Colts started winning more of the 50-50 balls and they took the lead following a move down the right which led to Ben Dudley driving the ball past the keeper from close range.
With Epworth defending a 2-1 lead after the break, the Colts continued to press and the Clee keeper had to be at his best to stop the visitors extending their lead.
Clee, however, made it 2-2 midway through the second half and converted a penalty to take a 3-2 lead.
The home keeper again rescued his side, denying Kyle Blackburn, and in a breakaway move the hosts established a two goal cushion to make it 4-2.
Epworth continued to battle and reduced arrears when Callum Marsh thumped the ball home from inside the area to make it 4-3.
But with time running out the visitors could not find another equaliser and crashed out of the cup.
Coach’s man of the match: Aiden Woodcock for his defensive display. Parents’ man of the match: Jack Lifsey for his excellent goalkeeping.
Next weekend it’s back to league action with Wrawby Rovers the visitors to Carrside, the Colts looking to maintain their unbeaten league form though to the end of the season.
