Colts U13s graft hard but are undone by skilful opponents

Epworth Colts U13s A 0 Appleby Frodingham 3

IT was always going to be a close match between these sides as they knew so much about each other, having played many a game over the years.

The tie started with the hosts on top for the first 10 minutes, with Sterling unleashing a cracker of a shot that went straight to the keeper.

The whole Epworth squad looked up for it in the opening period, with Hill and Kelly in attack linking up nicely with Tuplin on the right.

Ogley and Hunt were mixing it up in the middle of the park with the supporting back four of Beevers, Harvey, Young and Nicholson protecting Johnson in goal.

The previous week's tough training sessions had obviously paid dividends as the Isle side penned Frodingham in their own half and attempted to build on their early dominance.

Even when the ball did sneak through the home defence, Colts stopper Johnson pumped it back up field with his trademark distribution.

However, as the game went on, the visitors dug deep and managed to turn the game on its head.

With a lightning break upfield Frodingham took the lead, netting after a goal-mouth scramble.

Despite Colts' good early form, it was the visitors who came out for the second half on top and put the hosts on the back foot with some good play.

Frodingham, now very much back in the game, proved their calibre with some incisive runs up field, forcing Beevers and Harvey to pull off some timely challenges.

Hunt also put in the mileage to try and contain the increasing midfield threat, and Ogley pulled in tight, trying to contain the visitors and turn the game back in Colts' favour.

With Maw also putting in a shift, the game still could still have gone either way and, with Tuplin and Kelly trying to find a way through the visiting defence, Colts did look to have a chance.

But it was Frodingham who bagged a second, with their skilful striker latching on to a lovely through ball to beat the keeper and put the game beyond the reach of Epworth.

Soon after, he took his third of the game with a simple tap in at the far post following a confident build up.

Sometimes hard graft just isn't enough but Epworth will feel they can bounce back from this gritty loss.

Man of the Match was Connor Hunt.
