Fun runners and athletes will be taking part in the 13 mile event at Scunthorpe United’s Glanford Park ground on Sunday, May 6, with a one mile fun run taking place alongside it.

This will be the first time a half marathon has been held in the borough since 2000 and several Isle firms have got behind the event.

Former Great Britain cross country runner Julian Moorhouse is helping to organise the event and his business, the Epworth-based Metres to Miles, has staged numerous sporting challenges.

And now McBrides Physiotherapy has been announced as the main headline sponsor for both the half marathon and fun run.

The business has practices in Scunthorpe, Brigg and on Church Street in Epworth.

Husband and wife team Ian and Helen McBride run the business and Ian explained his decision to back the event.

He said: “With the event being based in Scunthorpe - and I am from Scunthorpe - there is that local connection.

“I’m quite a keen runner myself and with the nature of my work, treating and handling sport-related injuries, I am keen to back this half marathon.

“We will be the main sponsor and I would like to take part but I can’t, however I will be there in a professional capacity, offering pre and post-match advice and recovery.”

Both the main event and the fun run will help to raise funds for Lindsey Lodge Hospice - which has a shop on Epworth High Street.

The half marathon covers a flat course, taking in Scotter Road, Asda roundabout, East Butterwick, River Trent, Burringham, Gunness, Doncaster Road, the M181 and Glanford Park.

Ian explained extensive advertising will take place on the run-up to the event and there are still places available for both individual and team entries.

“We’re trying to encourage local businesses to take part, entering corporate teams,” he added.

“There might be individuals who feel a bit intimidated at entering on their own but they could do it as a team and this would add to the banter and experience.

“At McBrides we can also do pre-race assessments, particularly for those doing this for the first time.

“We can identify possible injuries and record running gait patterns on the treadmill which would help us identify potential problems beforehand.”

• There is a still a need for race marshalls to help out on the day.
