Defensive errors end Haxey's unbeaten run
Haxey Town 1 BBM 3
HAXEY's recent run of good form ended on Saturday. They were simply not at their best throughout and found too many key players not performing to their full potential.
Strangely, Haxey started the better team, which is something that they don't normally do.
This is perhaps what unsettled their flowing football. They took a deserved lead after 15 minutes when Paul Bradley smashed home a free kick from 20yards out for his 21st of the season.
Haxey then seemed to relax and were punished when they failed to clear their defensive lines and the grateful striker tapped home for the equaliser.
The interval witnessed some unrest in the camp, something that is not normally apparent in the Haxey outfit. This feeling of unrest was added to when BBM took the lead from another lapse in concentration from Haxey. Some bizarre refereeing decisions then saw Haxey reduced to ten men when key midfielder Martin Smedley was dismissed for asking the referee a question? The recent 'Respect the referee' campaign states that only the captain is allowed to speak to the referee about unclear decisions. However, for the referee to take this literally and remove the common sense element from the game is going to damage the grass roots level of football rather than enhance it.
With that said, the game then just frittered away, with the Haxey now on tenterhooks every time they appealed a dubious throw in or debatable offside, in fear of receiving a caution from the official. BBM secured the points with a late third goal from a sloppy clearance, and Haxey left the field of play knowing they have to change their attitude if they are to enhance their League position further.
Haxey's man of the match - Andrew Fretwell.
They have the immediate chance to gain revenge over BBM with the return fixture this Saturday.
Team from - Stanley, Pashley, M Bradley, Baren, Fretwell, Mole, R Spink, M Smedley, Hughes, Spittlehouse, Johnson, D Spink, P Bradley, Perrin, Green, S Smedley - to meet at The Loco at 1pm or 1.30pm at Redbourn Sports Ground, Cemetery Road, Scunthorpe, for a 2pm kick off.
