Doncaster Rovers: '˜I've not hit my goals target', admits Andy Williams

Hanging on for their dear lives in League One, Doncaster Rovers have collectively fallen way short of expectations this season.

And striker Andy Williams has also admitted that he has failed to meet his individual targets - barring a very late goal glut.

The 29-year-old was Rovers’ marquee signing last summer and has since shouldered much of the goalscoring burden at his new club.

Williams’ goal against Coventry - his first from open play in 18 games - took his tally to 16 for the season. Fewer than what he had in mind.

“I always maintain I’m a positive person and I believe in my ability,” Williams told The Star.

“That’s 16 for the season now and seven assists so I’m quite happy with the return I’ve got. Obviously you’d always like more. I haven’t hit my target so I’ve got two more games to hopefully score a lot of goals and hit my target.”

On Rovers’ battle to beat the drop, he added: “We’re still in there with a fighting chance.

“I think performances of late have been good.

“It’s easier said than done at times to dig it out but thankfully we’ve been doing that and it’s been getting us the results in the last two or three games.

“Now we’ve got to go to Crewe and win again and put a bit more pressure on the people around us.”

Williams, meanwhile, was suitably impressed with the performance of Tommy Rowe against the Sky Blues.

“He was outstanding,” he said.

“We had a bit of a setback with Chappy getting injured in training and Tommy got a slightly new role and took to it brilliantly.

“He was brilliant at winning it back so he was our first line of defence as well as being a link in between defence and attack.”
