Doncaster Rovers: Team selection may provide player retention hint

Darren Ferguson's team selection this weekend may provide a further hint at who the Scot wants to keep at the club.

Doomed Doncaster Rovers have little more than pride to play for in Sunday’s final game when they host promotion-chasing Burton Albion (12.30pm).

All but mathematically relegated, Rovers have begun the process of gearing up for life in League Two - with Ferguson set to firm up his player retention plans with the board over the coming days.

Ferguson has already stated there will be ‘big changes’ over the summer and has been heavily critical of the club’s recruitment prior to his arrival last October.

But any potential clear-out of playing staff on the back of this season’s relegation is complicated by the fact that virtually the entire senior squad remains under contract until 2017 at the earliest.

“We’ve got another league game on Sunday, we can’t forget about that, and I’ve got to try and pick the right team in the sense of who I can see being here next season,” said Ferguson, following last weekend’s defeat at Crewe.

“There’s a core that I’m quite happy to keep.

“But as time goes on sometimes your decisions become a lot easier.”

Marko Marosi and Matthew Davies are out of contract this summer.

Players used sparingly under Ferguson, but still under contract, include Curtis Main, Gary MacKenzie and Dany N’Guessan.

Earlier this season Rovers cancelled the contracts of Richie Wellens, Rob Jones and Harry Forrester by mutual consent - which is one method they might repeat to cull the playing staff.
