YOUNGSTERS are being encouraged to get fit this winter by joining the Epworth Colts Academy Squad.

There are regular training sessions every Saturday at Epworth Thurlow Field, from 10am to noon, and the activities are open to all children, both boys and girls.

Currently there are 16 members and although the squad do not play competitive matches, there are plans to arrange friendlies and take part in the Doncaster Quick Play tournament on Saturday, February 4.

The Colts have been established for many years, explained manager Steve Woodcock, who added the academy has a ‘football in the community’ ethos with social events just as important as sporting activities.

He added: “We do organise trips out and the kids enjoyed a recent trip to Doncaster to see Rovers play Southampton. The academy paid for this, organising a bus, and the kids loved it.

“We are now looking at going to Scunthorpe United and a race night on March 2 has sold out.

“These activities allow parents to talk with the coaches.”

The academy focuses on the under sevens up to the under nine age group and girls up to the age of 12 are welcome.

Membership of the academy costs £3 per session over 10 weeks or £30 at the beginning of the course.

A kit of shirt, shorts and socks is secured once the £30 is paid in full.
