Good win for Ladies

Epworth Ladies Hockey 4 Driffield 2

THIS was the first game after a long break due to the bad weather but despite this Epworth started strongly.

The first goal came from a penalty corner. The ball was received by Lucie Thornton who struck it sweetly into the corner of the goal.

Centre forward April Butterick was put through by Emily Fordham. She rounded the keeper and powered her shot into the goal for Epworth's second.

At the start of the second half Driffield came back at Epworth and despite some strong defending from Robyn Carr and Fiona Chester they were able to get a shot on goal.

This initial shot was saved by goal keeper Lisa Teanby but she couldn't keep the rebound out.

This spurred Epworth on and some excellent wing play by Helen Lightburn put April Butterick through for her second and Epworth's third.

Driffield kept battling and scored their second so Epworth couldn't relax. Epworth secured their win with five minutes to go when a penalty corner was fired towards goal by Cassie Ellis, picked up mid-air by Sally Robinson who slotted the ball home.

An excellent result for the Isle team. Umpire's player April Butterick, players' player Emily Fordham and Helen Lightburn.

Epworth 2 Goole 1

Epworth met old rivals Goole at Trinity last Saturday and started confidently on the attack and soon were ahead due to a belter of a goal from Cassie Ellis into the top corner.

Goole were quick on the break but were frustrated by excellent play from Esther Latham and Kathryn Young in mid field.

The defence battled hard and Lisa Teanby in goal made some excellent saves at crucial times.

Epworth's lead was extended when April Butterick put Sally Robinson through who neatly pushed the ball past the Goole keeper.

Goole continued to press in the second half and were rewarded with an excellently worked goal. Epworth though weren't prepared to surrender their lead and continued to attack and despite not adding to the scoreline were more than happy with the result.

Epworth v Kingston Upon Hull 3rds

EPWORTH finally managed to play the second round of the Judith Nicholson Cup last Sunday at the third attempt.

Hull started the stronger and put Epworth under a lot of pressure. The defence worked hard and Lisa Teanby made some excellent saves.

The Isle team managed to get the play going the other way. A cross from April Butterick from a penalty corner found Sally Robinson on the back post who squeezed the ball past the keeper.

Hull kept pushing for the equaliser.

Kathryn Young, Esther Latham and Nicola Young worked tirelessly in mid field to create some of Epworth's chances. Despite this Epworth defended for much of the second half and inevitably Hull broke through from a penalty corner to level the score. With minutes to go and penalty flicks looming Lauren Miller was put through by a long ball from April Butterick and coolly put the ball past the keeper.

Hull weren’t finished and it took frantic defending in the last minute to secure the win.

Umpire’s player Kathryn Young, players’ player Lisa Teanby.
