John Buckley: Doncaster Rovers can have no complaints about impending relegation

The prospect of another relegation is very hard to take but, sadly, Doncaster Rovers can have no complaints about the position they're in.

It’s made all the more disappointing by the fact that in the last four or five games we’ve seen what this team is capable of on its day.

Things seem to have fallen into place in terms of the manager finding the right players for his system - but it’s come too late.

When you go 16 league games without a win what that does is leave absolutely no margin for error and nobody can say that finishing in the bottom four isn’t a fair reflection of how the season has gone.

I was at Crewe and I honestly felt that we could still get out of the big hole that we’d dug ourselves into.

I was even more confident that the great escape was still on after Tommy Rowe scored that vital first goal.

We were in total control of the game and had we gone in at half time leading there was only one team going on to win it.

However, Cedric Evina’s mistake transformed the whole game. You can look back over the season and pick out several more costly individual errors.

It’s too easy to blame individuals though, it’s a team game. In that second half the likes of Evina, James Coppinger and Cameron Stewart put umpteen balls into the box but there was no one getting on the end of them.

As a team we’ve just not been good enough. And as the manager stated afterwards, we have not reacted well enough to adversity over the course of the whole season. Saturday was a little snapshot of that.

The run of games without a win only underlines that point. It also suggests that there just aren’t enough leaders in that dressing room, people who will take things by the scruff of the neck and carry their teammates along with them while they are doing it.

Sunday’s game is a difficult one but we just have to get through that and concentrate on next season.
