Legends Open win for golfers

A QUARTET of golfers are celebrating after recording a comfortable victory in the recent Legends Open.

Held for the first time at Driffield Golf Club, the competition proved to be a popular one as Legend members turned up to contest their very own claret jug on a well-presented course which included excellent greens albeit with some very tough pin placements.

A nine hole competition took place in the morning which saw the four-man team of Geoff Hancock, Ian Gravel, Mark Whitehead and Chris Gibbons take top honours.

Many players found the undulating greens and pin positions difficult to cope with which was reflected in the scoring.

Unusually the leaderboard was spread out but Geoff Hancock and Tony Clarke emerged as runaway leaders and both put on vintage displays, making a number of birdies between them.

Hancock just edged out Clarke by two points with his total of 40 to win his first big Legends event and Andy Robinson took third place with 33.

Other winners included Hancock again who triumphed along with Chris Gibbons in the nearest pin competition and the longest drive was claimed by Steve Owen.

Best putter award with a score of 29 went to Tony Clarke but once again no-one recorded a two so the jackpot rolls over to the next event.

Captain Brian Kilminster thanked members and sponsors which included Epworth's Queen's Head public house as well as Graydon Associates.

This month's outing takes place on Saturday August 28, at Mid Yorkshire Golf Club and players should meet at 10.45am in the clubhouse - closing date for entries is Monday August 23.
