Magnificent Blues hold their nerve in cup penalty drama

THE outstanding matches in the first round of the Gainsborough and District Football League Trinity Challenge Cup were completed on Saturday with FC Blues pulling off the surprise result of the day.`

Travelling to first division Retford Town Reserves, they battled their way to a 3-3 draw at the end of 120 minutes of excelelnt local cup football.

They then held their nerve the better in the penalty shootout to win 5-4 and complete what was, without doubt, their best display of the season.

BFC Birches, top of Division Two at present, made the short journey to Mattersey and largely dominated the match, running out 3-0 winners.

Mattersey were missing one or two vital players, but nothing should detract from a fine performances from the Birches players.

They will now face a much sterner test in the next round when they will play Gainsborough Town Canute, who defeated a gallant East Drayton 8-0.

The Gainsborough side carried far too much pace, power and finishing skills with hat-tricks from Danny Martin and Craig Lill.

In Division One, a remarkable game took place at Rampton Hospital when visitors White Lion eventually ran out 6-4 winners.

Rampton will play much worse than this and win matches, and they certainly deserved something from a game they fully contributed to.

White Lion, on the other hand, while delighted they won the match, will be aware that they will have to defend much better than this if they are to become champions.

AFC Friendship kept themselves well in contention with a 3-0 win over a Harworth Colliery side that never stopped trying and certainly let the Gainsborough side know they had been in a game.
