SOUTH Axholme School’s Under 16s basketball team were recently crowned the Scunthorpe Schools champions.

In the group stages the boys narrowly beat Melior before moving on to a more convincing 10-2 win against North Axholme.

Baskets were scored by Chris Durdy, Liam McKay, Sean Byrne, Josh Sazcek and Chris Jones.

David Mann showed superb defence and set up a fast break scored by Chris Durdy.

In the semi finals the boys beat Winterton in a close game 4-2 with baskets scored by Josh Sazcek and Chris Durdy.

The squad saved their best performance for the final beating St Bedes 9-6. Baskets were scored by Liam McKay, Chris Jones and Chris Andrews. Great defence was shown by Sean Byrne, Dom Johnson and Mathew Huntington to keep the St Bedes score down.

Josh Sazcek had a great game gaining numerous rebounds. From one rebound a quick pass to David Mann set up a fast break scored by Chris Durdy.

A school spokesman said: “A superb team performance, the boys will now represent Scunthorpe in the next round in Hull – good luck!”
